Talking home insurance excess - can this really be true?

i have a £200 excess on my contents policy. OH fell on dishwasher and it is now leaking and has been leaking without our knowledge so has warped plinth underneath (it is integrated). Rang our insurers re possible claim. Wait for this. We have to send off a cheque for £200 and they will send round a comet engineer to see if it is repairable. If it is they repair it and keep the £200 irrespective of how much the repair costs. if it is not repairable they will pay for replacement. Apparently we will have to fit the plinth ouselves in any event although this isn't exactly DIY which is why we paid a kitchen fitter to fit it originally. is this now common policy (pardon the pun) or just Aviva taking the p**s!
